“Win or Learn” is for Losers

I frequently hear people say things like:

You learn more from your failures than your successes.

This is terrible advice. Winners don’t say this.

Is it important to learn from losses? Of course. But going in with a “win or learn” mindset is just priming yourself with excuses for failure.

I’ve seen this firsthand working with a lot of the top Jiu Jitsu athletes. Combat sports require an incredibly strong mental game. Across the board these athletes dismiss the “win or learn” mindset.

All of them have had losses that sting. They learned valuable lessons from the losses. But they go into every match focused on winning, not learning.

The Thomas Edison “let’s try 10,000 lightbulbs until we find one that works” approach sounds nice but is not a good way to go about life, business, etc. Winners find something that works and build off of it.
